Dorchester’s own fabulous author Leanna Renee Hieber appears in this 3 minute segment which aired last night on BBC America. “All of The Way Station background footage was filmed during an event I was invited to attend as a guest reader by Sci-Fi/Fantasy media maven Diana M. Pho. You’ll see me with Strangely Beautiful book 1 in hand. Later in the evening I was the literary guest in a lineup of dance and musical guests. 🙂 Fun!” says Leanna of the experience.

As far as favorite titles go, I haven’t read these books (yet) but the titles are quite intriguing: Doctor Grordbort’s Contrapulatronic Dingus Directory, The Buntline Special: A Weird West Tale and The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack

What’s been fun about being invited into the Steampunk community is that I was alreay writing and living in a “Neo-Victorianism” already, long before I knew there was any sort of crowd associated with it.
What draws me in is the clothing, clearly, and all the atmosphere and opportunities for creating a new Victorianism, re-envisioned. Considering I’ve been writing books set in the 1880s since I was 12, the Victorian Era clearly is a life-long love affair. If you want to get technical about the specific category of my work, I’m Gaslight / Gothic Fantasy becase I use Fantasy and paranormal elements rather than the Sci-Fi and gadget/technology elements present in straight Steampunk.
Cherie Priest’s “Boneshaker” and subsequent titles are amazing, Scott Westerfield’s “Leviathan” and Gail Carriger’s “Parasol Protectorate” are very popular and for good reason. O. M. Grey’s “Avalon Revisited” chooses an interesting and unique tack for a paranormal romance in that it’s the direct POV of the hero.

I have read all of one Steampunk novel, and I am hooked. I generally read historical romance, but love Victorian Era so decided to switch it up a bit. I was worried about Steampunk because I wasnt sure I could keep up with the technology and description in a fantasy styled world, but the Iron Duke was so incredibly well done I was blown away and I can’t wait for Meljean Brooks next full-length novel, as well as finding other Steampunk novels to read, romance or otherwise.
I’ve read only one Steampunk novel and absolutely LOVED it. It’s The Infernal Devices: Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. It’s the prequel to the YA fantasy series The Mortal Instruments. I’m looking forward to reading more Steampunk books since I really think the genre is fascinating. Please count me in if this is open internationally. Thank you!!
